Carroll reaches 1,000 training wins

TORONTO, August 11, 2024 – Josie Carroll added yet another chapter to her outstanding training career when she recorded her 1,000th victory on Sunday at Woodbine.

The conditioner earned her milestone triumph with LNJ Foxwoods’ Spinzar, a 4-year-old son of Tapit, in the fourth race. The Kentucky-bred paid $12.30 for the win.

In 2006, Carroll became the first female trainer to win The King’s Plate, with Edenwold. She added a second win in the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown with the filly Inglorious in 2011.

In 2020, she won the Plate with eventual Horse of the Year Mighty Heart, who added a victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes 17 days later at Fort Erie.

This July, she saddled filly Kin’s Concerto to a win in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks Presented by Stella Artois.

The Ontario-born Carroll started her career under Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Mac Benson at the storied Windfields Farm. In 1994, she began training on her own.

Notable horses she has trained include two-time Horse of the Year Mighty Heart, Careless Jewel, Avie’s Flatter, Ami’s Holiday, Amis Gizmo, Leigh Court, Lukes Alley, Inglorious, Serenading and Springside.

Carroll has recorded 176 career stakes wins, 59 of them graded, and nearly $59 million in purse earnings.

She was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2019.
